Two 8x8" abstract paintings, titled "Introspect" - using various impasto mediums and palette knife to create a geometric pattern, reminiscent of pixels or Tetris.

Impasto painting

Something different again - this was a uni painting assignment, where we had to dissect a painting by a well-known artist, and reproduce it using impasto methods (i.e. paint thickened using various additives). For these paintings (on four A4-sized canvases), I've added rice flour, salt, polyfilla and texture paste.

Painting a Day - Holidays!

I've been away on a family holiday in Fiji for the last 10 days, and unfortunately we did not have internet access so I decided to take a mini break from everything. I did some little water-colour paintings to share with you while I was away, these have found homes with our friends who travelled with us:

A small water-colour painting today, playing with light and colour to create an imaginary garden. I had planned to work on this further with some ink, but I think I'll leave it as is for now.

Some beautiful new grevillea blooms in our garden, such a lovely lemon colour. The bees are loving it!

Work-in-progress for a uni assignment. We are required to select a material (e.g. hair), and contextualise the material by choosing a quote or saying. I'll fill you in on the rest when I'm finished!

Update:
This painting represents these lines from the poem 'Lady Lazarus' by Sylvia Plath:
"Out of the ash
I rise with my red hair
And I eat men like air"
Reading some of the analysis of the poem, I decided to go with the view that Plath imagines a woman who has become pure spirit rising against the imprisoning others around her.

One of the joys of this challenge has been trying different styles and techniques. Today's painting is inspired by the art of Nicolas de Staël, an artist who distills landscape down to pure shape and colour. This scene is a country lane lined by trees and a stone wall. Painted using a palette knife and acrylic paint, trying to get lots of texture and variation.
